At this point, both the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal, muddled in their own fights, are claiming to be the champions of farmers’ causes in the state. Farmers in Punjab, however, are unimpressed. Speaking to The Wire, a leading farm union leader said that political parties and big Indian corporate houses have always been hand-in-glove, and they cannot entirely trust any one party. They’re all “anti-farmer”, he believes. On Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s resignation from the Union cabinet, he said that it’s good that the regional parties are thinking about regional issues.
