Despite Eid, Banks to Remain Operational on March 31 For Year-End Transactions

New Delhi: There will be no holiday for banks dealing with government transactions on March 31, despite the day being a public holiday on account of Eid al-Fitr. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), based on the Union government’s direction, issued a notification to agency banks to keep their branches dealing with government transactions open for the public on the day. 

“The Government of India has made a request to keep all branches of the banks dealing with Government receipts and payments open for transactions on March 31, 2025 (Monday-Public Holiday) so as to account for all the Government transactions relating to receipts and payments in the Financial Year 2024-25 itself,” the RBI stated in its notification.

“Agency banks are advised to keep all their branches dealing with government business open on March 31, 2025 (Monday),” it added.

The Union government requested the RBI to keep banks open facilitate the accounting of all government receipts and payments within the financial year 2024-25, as March 31 marks the end of the financial year.

Banks have also been asked to give wide publicity of the same to let customers know that banking services will be available on March 31.

There are 33 agency banks, including from designated public sector, private sector and foreign banks. These banks are authorised to handle government-related transactions under Section 45 of the RBI Act.
