On the intervening night of July 1 and 2, the Uttar Pradesh police raided the house of renowned Urdu poet Munnawar Rana in Lucknow. The raid took place after police officials stated that the poet's son, Tabrez, had 'staged' an attack on himself over an ongoing property dispute within the extended family. Rana’s family has alleged that police misbehaved with the family members in the house during the raid.

Rana, who is confined to the bed due to his ailment, says that the police has tarnished his reputation. Rana alleged that the policemen entered the house without informing him or other family members. Sumaiya, his daughter, has accused the administration of targeting the family by conducting the raid in this manner.
