Trump Terms US-China Tariff Talks in Geneva a 'Very Good Meeting', Says Negotiated 'Total Reset'

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Saturday (May 10) termed the talks between US and Chinese officials in Switzerland’s Geneva as “a very good meeting” and said that both the countries had negotiated a “total reset” in a friendly and constructive manner.

“A very good meeting today with China, in Switzerland. Many things discussed, much agreed to. A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner. We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!” said Trump in a post on Truth Social.

Earlier, top US and Chinese officials had completed the first day of talks in Geneva aimed at de-escalating tensions that threaten to hammer the global economy. Negotiations were expected to continue on Sunday, reported The Guardian.

The meeting at Geneva is the first such event since both countries which are the two largest economies in the world, had levied tariffs well over 100% on each other’s goods.

The talks in Geneva saw the participation of He Lifeng, the vice-premier of China, US treasury secretary Scott Bessent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer.

The both countries have imposed a trade embargo on each other with 145% tariffs imposed by the US on Chinese goods and China imposing retaliatory tariffs of 125% on US goods.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jia had said in April that Beijing is not looking to fight a trade war, but China will not flinch if tariff hostilities escalate to that point.

Back in April, Trump had announced a 90-day tariff pause for several countries, but further increased tariffs on Chinese imports, which resulted in the total tariffs on Chinese good increasing to 145%.
