The numbers, from a health and economic perspective post the second wave of COVID-19, look quite grim. But if there is one segment that has been hit harder than the others on literally every count, it is women.

This is not a problem that has arisen out of COVID-19 though. According to a recent Global Gender Gap Report 2021 by the World Economic Forum, India has slipped 28 places to rank 140th among 156 countries globally, making it the third-worst performer in South Asia, with Pakistan and Afghanistan trailing and Bangladesh being at the top.

Mitali Mukherjee spoke with Ashwini Deshpande, Professor of Economics and the Founding Director of Centre for Economic Data and Analysis (CEDA) at Ashoka University, to understand the gaps that had opened up in health, employment and opportunity for women in India.
