A massive leak of documents was published by several major news organisations that allegedly ties world leaders to secret stores of wealth – the list includes names like King Abdullah of Jordan, and associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. The India list contains names like Reliance ADAG boss Anil Ambani, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the sister of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi and the husband of Biocon founder Kiran Mazumder Shaw.

The records include an unprecedented amount of information on so-called beneficial owners of entities registered in the British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, Hong Kong, Belize, Panama, South Dakota and other secrecy jurisdictions. They also contain information on the shareholders, directors and officers. The Pandora Papers investigation involves more than 600 journalists from 150 media outlets in 117 countries. Mitali Mukherjee spoke with P. Vaidyanathan Iyer executive editor, national affairs at the Indian Express, on the details of their findings.
