New Delhi: Data pertaining to reservation published in the annual report of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for the year 2024-25 has revealed that more than 66% of the Group C safai karmacharis (sanitation workers) employed with the Union government come from the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), reported The Hindu.

However, according to the data, this figure is much lower in other categories of jobs such as Group A. In Group A, 14.2% posts in Union ministries and departments are held by SCs, 6.54% by STs and 19.14% by OBCs.

At present, DoPT regulations on direct recruitment to all groups of posts in the Union government mandates reserving 15% of seats for SCs, 7.5% for STs, 27% for OBCs, and 10% for Economically Weaker Sections.

Therefore, the report reveals that in the group A category posts, the representation of SCs, STs and OBCs was even lower than the total reservation available to them.

In Group B posts, SCs comprised 16.2%, STs 7.63%, and OBCs 21.95%.
