New Delhi: The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA) on Wednesday (May 31) organised a three-hour-long protest against an event organised by the ABVP on the JNU campus where Union minister V.K. Singh was an invitee.
The Union minister of state for external affairs, however, skipped the event organised near Sabarmati Hostel to mark World No Tobacco Day.
The BAPSA criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre for its "anti-minority" policies, while the RSS-backed student wing ABVP condemned the former as "anti-national".
The BAPSA had called the protest for extending invite to Singh, who had allegedly made anti-Dalit remarks last year in the backdrop of the Faridabad incident where two Dalit students were burnt alive.
"Today's government is anti-Dalit and anti-Muslim," BAPSA leader Rahul Sonpimple said and attacked the government over its recent notification to ban sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets.
At the no-tobacco campaign, JNU ABVP president Lalit Pandey said, "Taliban was funded by selling tobacco in Afghanistan. We are launching this campaign in protest against such practices."
