The victim was in a relationship with the sister of the accused. The couple had eloped after facing resistance from the woman's family.

New Delhi: A man beheaded his sister’s lover who belonged to another caste and walked into a police station in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, with the severed head on Thursday, the Times of India reported.

Personnel at Tilwara Ghat police station were stunned to see accused Dheeraj Shukla, 22, who came to surrender, with the severed head in one hand, and an axe in the other, dripping blood along the way, the report said.

According to the report, the victim, Brijesh Barman, 35, was a resident of Ramangara village. He was in a relationship with Shukla’s sister. Facing resistance from Shukla’s family, the couple eloped around two months ago. Acting on a missing person’s complaint lodged by Shukla’s family, the police traced the couple and had them return to their respective families.

Locals TOI spoke to said Barman and Shukla had clashed several times earlier over territorial rivalry in bootlegging.

Now, allegedly furious over the relationship, Shukla chased Barman through a field and allegedly killed him under a tree. Shukla has been arrested for murder, the report added.

Caste crimes continue to be an occurrence in Madhya Pradesh. In December 2020, a 25-year-old Dalit youth in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhattarpur district was killed because he touched the plates of ‘upper’ caste men during a party.
