On May 22, in Bhureka village of Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit groom and family members who had been a part of his wedding procession were attacked by people of the dominant-caste Jat community.
The groom was riding a buggy and had hired a DJ to play music. As the procession progressed, people from the Jat community objected to the DJ and buggy.
The attackers allegedly halted the procession, pulled the groom down from the buggy, hurled caste-based slurs at him, and beat his family members with sticks and iron rods.
They said the groom would be shot if he dared to join the procession on the buggy again. The wedding ceremony was then completed under police protection.
