New Delhi: BJP leader and chief whip of the opposition in the Karnataka legislative council N. Ravikumar was booked for charges including inciting hatred against Muslims over his “Pakistan” remark against deputy commissioner Fouzia Tarannum.
On May 24, during a BJP protest, Ravikumar had accused IAS officer Tarannum of working on the orders of the Congress party and had said “she seems to have come from Pakistan," reporting Deccan Herald.
The protest was organised by the BJP against what the party termed as “ill-treatment” of the leader of opposition in the legislative council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy. The saffron party claimed that he was locked inside a government guest house while Congress supporters had surrounded it.
As he was participating in the protest, Ravikumar asked deputy commissioner Tarannum if she had come from Pakistan.
Following his statement, Ravikumar was booked on charges of inciting hatred against Muslims and using derogatory language by calling police officers slaves on the basis of the complaint by one Dattatreya Ikkalakhi.
He was also accused of threatening and causing insult to Scheduled Caste people and District In-charge Minister Priyank Kharge.
On Monday (May 26), Muslim women leaders submitted a memorandum to Kalaburagi police commissioner Sharanappa S.D. and urged the police to take action against the BJP leader.
"This is a case of hatred and prejudice. It is also a direct attack on her dignity and patriotism," said the delegation of Muslim women leaders.
