'It is the responsibility of the government in power to ensure the freedom of religion, especially as the people have entrusted the party with power, believing in its capacity for good governance,' said Reverend Machado.

New Delhi: The Metropolitan Archbishop of Bangalore, Reverend Peter Machado, has expressed concern over what he has called is “the targeting and persecution of Christians in Manipur,” a state which has seen widespread mob violence and arson since May 3.

Local reports have it that 31 people have died.

“It is with deep concern that we note the resurgence of the targeting and persecution of Christians in the peaceful state of Manipur in the North East, where the Christian population comprises 41%. We have received reports that three churches built in 1974 and some houses have been set on fire, and the people have been forced to flee to safer places. Furthermore, there have been disturbing reports in the news and on social media that the Jesuit Fathers serving in these areas have been threatened and made to feel insecure,” the statement said.

Machado, who heads the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council and All Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights, said that it is distressing news that the Christian community is feeling insecure in spite of a sizeable presence.

“We are reminded that even the world-famous female boxer Mary Kom hails from this state. While the BJP Government in power has issued helpline instructions, it demonstrates the gravity of the danger faced by people who are being targeted for their religious beliefs and practices. It is reported that around seventeen churches are either vandalised, desecrated, or defiled. Many are still burning,” Machado noted in the statement.

Since his statement was released, unverified lists of churches having been ransacked or destroyed across the state have been circulated. Internet is suspended across Manipur in the wake of the violence, making it difficult to corroborate claims and even death tolls.

The statement offered solidarity and prayers for Christians in Manipur.

“It is the responsibility of the government in power to ensure the freedom of religion, especially as the people have entrusted the party with power, believing in its capacity for good governance,” he added.

Activist John Dayal, who is the spokesman of  All India Catholic Union, told The Wire, “While the Kukis and other tribals in the two districts close to Imphal are the main targets as a community, the churches targeted include those of the Christians in the Meiti community.”

“The Christians in the state are in a state of shock. But so also are the rest of us across India. The arson and killings are almost on the scale of Kandhamal in Orissa in 2008. Our response has been in prayer, and expectations that the government will do its constitutional duty and restore peace,” Dayal added.
