Watch | 'Christians Are Being Targeted; Like Vajpayee, Modi Must be More Generous and Trust Us'
In an interview to discuss the recent treatment of two Kerala nuns from the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate as well as the wider treatment of Christians in India, the Archbishop of Bangalore, Peter Machado, has said that the treatment by the Chhattisgarh police of the two Kerala nuns was prejudicial, unfair and wrong. The Archbishop was also critical of one-sided comments made by the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, and he has also called for immediate action to be taken against Bajrang Dal member Ravi Nigam, who brought false complaints against the nuns, as well as members of the Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini, such as Jyoti Sharma, who have been accused of slapping, beating and torturing the nuns.
Speaking more widely about the way in which India’s Christians are treated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, the Archbishop said that they are being “targeted in areas dear to us”, such as the schools they run, the hospitals and health centres they maintain. The Archbishop spoke at length about false accusations of conversion that are frequently levelled at Christians. He says these are untrue and they hurt Christians.
