It has been over eight years since the communal riots in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar shook the whole country in September 2013.
More than 60 people died and more than 60,000 became homeless. Some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were accused of their involvement in the riots, and some of the party MLAs had to go to jail for making communal speeches and inciting riots.
The religious polarisation created by the riots helped the BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections and in the 2017 assembly elections.
However, after eight years, the conversation on the Muzaffarnagar riots is back. The Wire team reached Kairana and tried to know the condition of the families displaced during the riots.
