Students, activists and civil society members on December 27, Monday staged a demonstration outside the Uttarakhand Bhawan in New Delhi, against the Haridwar hate speech assembly that called for the genocide of the Muslim community.
Following political outrage over the event, the Uttarakhand Police booked Jitendra Narayan Tyagi, formerly known as Wasim Rizvi, who was Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board chairman, and others for their alleged hate speeches at the Dharma Sansad in Haridwar. The FIR has been registered under IPC Section section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language).
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Saket Gokhale has also filed a complaint against the provocative speeches made at the event in Haridwar. However, no arrests have been made in the case so far.
Sumedha Pal of The Wire spoke to the activists at the protest site who voiced concerns over hate politics and lack of timely action over the incident.
