Chennai: Among the scores of videos on our screens providing a volley of advice to contain COVID-19, Arivu’s stands out. The little over two-minute rap titled 'Vanakkam Virus' (Namaste Virus) has no advice to offer, but it shows you the mirror. “The cities might shut down, what about the hunger?” it asks, bluntly. Will the coronavirus actually go away if you light lamps and clap, it wants to know.

With some powerful, unsettling questions on the way the crisis is being handled, Arivu goes beyond the present situation to reflect upon how the poor and marginalised have always been treated in a country like India. “When you ask people to clap hands, bang plates and light lamps, do you realise who you are leaving out?” Arivu asks. According to him, the 'mob mentality' disallows any rational thinking about what steps need to be taken.

Presently at his hometown of Arakkonam, Arivu had no intention of creating a rap about the COVID-19 crisis. It was only when migrant labourers across the country were forced to walk thousands of miles and were stripped of their dignity that the idea came to him. “Because I am an artist, I don't have to react to everything in society. But when I saw the migrant workers being treated the way they were, I felt compelled. I understand we need to cooperate with the government to contain this virus, but I also realise it is only the working class that gets affected more when the country is in crisis. The coronavirus might be a new virus, but some of us have always been fighting some viruses.”

The irony of asking everyone to ‘stay home and stay safe’ is too stark to be missed when Arivu speaks. “I come from an area where most people do not have homes. How can I even find such advise acceptable? Home is not a comfortable space for everyone in this society”, he says.

The video for the rap was shot using a phone over two days, with some help from friends in Chennai. “I really did not have any idea of doing this, but when some people could clap hands and light lamps, when many others were on streets not knowing who or where to turn to, I had to do, despite all the limitations.”
