New Delhi: The US has said that ties between India and the country are built on extremely strong foundations and can thus help navigate the issue of the bribery charges against billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani.

A day ago, on November 21, the Securities and Exchange Commission and an Attorney’s Office of the United States charged billionaire Gautam Adani over his role in an alleged bribery scam involving Indian government officials.

Asked about the indictment, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said they were aware of the allegations.

“Obviously we’re aware of these allegations, and I would have to refer you to the SEC [Securities and Exchange Commission] and DOJ [Department of Justice] about the specifics of those allegations against the Adani Group,” she said.

She then said that US and India ties are on strong foundation.

“What I will say is on the U.S. and India relationship, we believe that it stands on an extremely strong foundation anchored in ties between our people and cooperation across a full range of global issues,” she said.

Reiterating the same point, Jean-Pierre added that she cannot go into the specifics of the matter, although she is confident that this is going to prove to be a navigable issue.

“What we believe and we’re confident about is that we’ll continue to navigate this issue as we have with other issues that may have come up as you just stated. And so the specifics of this, this is something that the SEC and DOJ can speak to directly, but again, we believe that…this relationship between India and the U.S. has been built on a strong foundation,” the Press Secretary said.

Adani Group has denied the charges and called them baseless.
