New Delhi: An Afghan national working at the Indian consulate in Afghanistan's Jalalabad was hurt after being shot at, the news agency PTI has reported.

Unidentified persons opened fire at his vehicle, the report said.

Although India had closed operations at the consulate after the takeover by the Taliban in 2020, some local staffers had stayed back.

India is in touch with Afghan authorities and awaiting report on the incident, the PTI report said.

In November, a senior Indian government functionary met with the acting Taliban defence minister of Afghanistan for the first time.

The meeting took place between the joint secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, J.P. Singh, who is in charge of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, and Molvi Muhammad Yaqoob Mujahid.
