New Delhi: The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conveyed to the Government of India through diplomatic channel that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s remarks about giving shelter to those seeking refuge from strife-torn Bangladesh.

“With due respect to (West Bengal) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, I would like to say, we have excellent relations with her. We have deep relations. But her remarks created confusion to some extent and there is scope to be misled,” said Bangaldesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, reported United News of Bangladesh.

Mahmud confirmed that the Indian government has been apprised of the issue through a diplomatic channel.

Recently, West Bengal CM Banerjee had said that if helpless people from Bangladesh knock the door of Bengal, they would be given refuge.

“I cannot say anything about Bangladesh because it is a separate country. Whatever needs to be said will be said by the Government of India. But I can say this much that if helpless people knock the door of Bengal, we will definitely give them refuge because there is a UN resolution,” Banerjee had said.

The BJP had slammed Banerjee for her statement, saying that she didn’t have the right to speak on the subject as it was a subject of the central government.
