New Delhi: US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz is unlikely to visit India this month as anticipated, while Vice President J.D. Vance’s trip remains on schedule.

Though there has been no official word from either side, both visits had been reported in various media outlets. They were expected to underscore the intensity of bilateral engagement under Donald Trump’s second term.

The Wire has confirmed that Waltz will not be travelling to India for an official visit this month. The reason for the cancellation is not known, and no alternative dates are currently in circulation.

Waltz had been slated to meet his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, and launch the new avatar of the dialogue on critical technology, TRUST, previously known as ICET. He was also expected to participate in the India-US Forum organised by Ananta Centre, which will now proceed without him.

Vice President Vance is still expected to visit India in about two weeks. After official meetings with Indian leadership in Delhi, His trip is likely to be more personal in nature, as he visits relatives of his Indian-origin wife, Usha.

Meanwhile, India is working to finalise a bilateral trade agreement with the United States in an effort to avoid the steep tariffs announced – and temporarily paused for 90 days – by President Trump.

The Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar had been one of the invitees to Trump’s swearing in ceremony in January this year. A month later, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Washington meet with the US President.

So far, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard remains the only Trump cabinet official to have visited India.
