New Delhi: Ahead of next month’s annual summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin visiting New Delhi, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart, foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Monday (November 17) and said the growth of India-Russia ties benefited both countries and the wider world.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar said India-Russia ties had long been a factor of stability in international relations. “Its growth and evolution is not only in our mutual interest but also in that of the world,” he said.
Jaishankar arrived in Moscow on Monday to take part in the SCO heads of government meeting.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aide Nikolay Patrushev held talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The meeting was also focused on preparations for Putin’s visit early next month. Patrushev also met National Maritime Security Coordinator Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta.
Putin is expected to visit India around December 5 for the annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India’s relations with Russia, especially its energy purchases since the start of the Ukraine war, have been contentious. The United States imposed tariffs on Indian goods, doubling the previous reciprocal tariffs, as a penalty for India buying Russian oil. President Donald Trump has recently contended that India was reducing its oil purchases from Russia due to tariff pressure.
There was no reference to energy trade in the public remarks on Monday.
Lavrov said the meeting was the sixth with Jaishankar this year and described the partnership as a priority for Moscow, calling it “one of a particularly privileged strategic character”.
He said both countries were working to ease conditions for businesses in each other’s markets and pointed to expanding trade and transport links. Lavrov described the North South Transport Corridor and the Northern Sea Route as “among the most promising projects”.
Referring to the forthcoming summit, Jaishankar said several agreements were close to completion and that their finalisation would “add more substance and texture” to the relationship.
