New Delhi: External affairs minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday (December 16) said India and Israel follow a “policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism”, as he strongly condemned a terror attack during Hanukkah celebrations in Australia.

Speaking at the start of talks with Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar in Jerusalem, Jaishankar conveyed “very sincere, deep condolences” over the loss of lives in the attack at Bondi Beach and said India condemns it “in the strongest possible terms”.

Two gunmen on Sunday opened fire at Sydney's Bondi Beach during Hanukkah celebrations, killing at least 15 people and injuring 40 others.

One of the alleged gunmen, Sajid Akram, 50, was found dead at the scene, while his son, Naveed Akram, was injured and taken into custody.

Indian police have confirmed that Akram, who moved to Australia in 1998, had an Indian passport, but had minimal contacts with family here.

Jaishankar said India and Israel were both countries with a “policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism” and expressed appreciation for Israel’s “consistent support to our fight against terrorism and all its forms and manifestations”.

During the press conference, Jaishankar reiterated India's support for the Gaza peace plan, expressing hope that it would lead to a “lasting and durable solution” to the ongoing conflict in the region.

He emphasised that discussions during his visit would focus on strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Israel, which has developed significantly over the past decade.

The visit comes amid preparations for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposed trip to India. Netanyahu was scheduled to travel to India earlier this month, but a phone call between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear the visit would take place at a later date.
