New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a flying visit to Indonesia to take part in the ASEAN-India summit, following which he will race back to India to greet world leaders as they arrive for the G20 summit.

Last year, India and ASEAN upgraded the nomenclature of their ties to “comprehensive strategic partnership”. It is expected to that Modi will be talking about further cooperation in maritime security domain during his trip. Along with the ASEAN-India summit, Modi will also take part in the East Asia summit.

He is scheduled to leave for Jakarta on Wednesday evening and return on Thursday night. Meanwhile, the first special guest for G20, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.

Reflecting the brief nature of the Indonesia visit, Ministry of External Affairs’ Secretary (East) Saurabh Kumar said that Modi will have no bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

To a question on whether the issue of China’s new political map would be discussed at Jakarta, the senior diplomat said, “It is difficult to anticipate what would be discussed when the leaders meet, but issues which are of mutual concern, regional and international, would all come up once they have their discussion. Whether there would be a consensus or not, I mean, I can’t anticipate what would come out of the discussions.”

India had lodged a “strong protest” with China over the 2023 version of its standard map as it continued to show Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory.

The leaders of the South East Asian regional association met in Jakarta on Tuesday against the backdrop of anxieties of the burgeoning China-US rivalry in the region.

Despite earlier differences on its approach towards Myanmar, ASEAN upheld the decision to not invite the junta government to regional meetings. Further, Myanmar’s chance to chair the bloc in 2026 has now been given the Philippines.

Besides, ASEAN agreed that the five-point peace consensus plan would continue to guide its approach towards Myanmar, where a 2021 military coup has isolated the country and led to imposition of sanctions.
