New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Poland and Ukraine between August 21 and 23, the Economic Times has reported.

Modi is said to land in the Polish capital, Warsaw, where he is expected to hold talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The focus of Modi's visit to Poland is centred around defence and strategic alignment. Modi's visit marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Poland in 40 years, after Morarji Desai.

Modi is expected to go to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, from Warsaw for half a day. According to ET, India's deputy national security advisor Pawan Kapoor was recently in Kyiv to work on the Prime Minister's visit agenda. He is expected to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Modi's visit to Ukraine will be his visit to that country after the Ukraine-Russia war broke out. More importantly, it comes nearly a month after Modi visited Russia and met with President Vladimir Putin. The Modi-Putin meeting received widespread criticism from Western capitals as well as from Zelenskyy.

As for India-Poland relations, Indian investment in Poland has been on a steady rise for the last several years, and is now estimated to be over and above $3 billion. Citing the ministry of external affairs, the ET report said that a number of Indian IT companies established in Poland employ nearly 10,000 Polish nationals.

India has been trying to adopt Poland's widely recognised capabilities and technologies in the food processing industry. The two nations already have a joint working group on food processing. Polish entrepreneurs in the sector are expected to participate in the mega food parks being established in India, government sources told ET.

India has also benefitted from Polish expertise in clean coal technologies. The role of the Polish public sector in the development of the mining and power sectors in India is widely known. The two countries had signed an agreement in 2019 to enhance bilateral cooperation in the coal and mining sector.
