In an interview to discuss India's relations with the US, China, Russia and Pakistan in the wake of the tariff crisis created by US President Donald Trump former foreign secretary Shyam Saran said, “He [Trump] is quite clearly vindictive and has it in for India”. Saran added that Indo-US relations “could certainly deteriorate” further.

Saran was also asked whether this is a bad time for Indian diplomacy. He said, “I will say that this is certainly a more challenging time for Indian diplomacy. There is no doubt that we are perhaps in a more vulnerable situation than we’ve been for quite some time. It would require a very careful re-orientation of our foreign policy.”
