Watch | Did the Islamabad Talks End in Historic Failure?
In an interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Pakistan’s former foreign minister Jalil Abbas Jilani talks about what happened in the peace talks and whether, after 21 hours of negotiation, the two sides are closer on important issues or still as divided as they’ve always been.
"I don't think it talks failed to be very honest. It was the first interaction between two warring factions... So, from that point of view, I think it was a forward movement and at least they were able to sit across the table and discuss issues," Jilani said.
Was the key problem a complete lack of trust on both sides? Could we be heading back to war now? Or will Pakistan strive to hold another round of talks before the two week ceasefire ends or collapses? How much has Pakistan's international standing been boosted by its role in the talks? And what should we expect next? These are some of the key issues discussed in this interview.
