On February 12, Bangladesh will hold what The Economist calls its first proper elections since 2008. In an interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Shafqat Munir, one of the country’s most highly regarded foreign policy experts and a senior fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies, says that if the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) wins, as is widely expected, it’s 60-year-old leader, Tarique Rahman, will seek to reset and improve the relations with India.

The interview also throws light on the nature and character of the two mains parties contending, Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP. It also discusses how the Bangladeshi people view the fact that Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League is banned and cannot participate in the elections.
