New Delhi: Economist S. Mahendra Dev has been named chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).

In 2023, Dev was appointed editor of the Economic and Political Weekly by the Sameeksha Trust. He succeeded Gopal Guru.

According to PTI, Dev has a PhD from the Delhi School of Economics with post-doctoral research experience at Yale University. He has been Distinguished Professor at ICFAI, Hyderabad, chairman of the Institute for Development Studies at Andhra Pradesh, and an independent director on the board of the Axis Bank.

Indian Express reported that Dev has resigned from his Axis Bank post upon being named head of the EAC-PM.

Dev will take over from Niti Aayog vice-chairman Suman Bery as chairperson of the EAC-PM.

Sixty seven years old, Dev has been director and vice-chancellor of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai.

He has also headed the Union government's Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices and been acting head of the National Statistical Commission. He was vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) at Washington D.C.

An expert on agriculture and rural economy, Dev has written or edited 22 books and has around 150 research publications.
