India's Core Infrastructure Sector Output Growth Falls to Seven-Month Low in May
New Delhi: India’s core infrastructure sector output growth stood at 0.5% in May, falling to a 7-month-low, as per official data released on Monday (June 22).
Earlier in April, the key infra sector, measured by the Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI), had posted 1.8% growth. In May 2025, this figure was 1.2%, reported Deccan Herald.
The 0.5% growth figure in May is the lowest since October 2025. Back then, it had posted a contraction of 0.1%. The present figure is also the second worst in 21 months.
When compared to the same month last year, five of the eight core sectors showed a decline in output during May.
While coal output fell by 9.3%, recording the steepest decline, refinery products, which has the highest weight in the index, posted 8.7% contraction in output, which is also the sharpest fall in 42 months.
Amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, crude oil production decreased by 4.6%, while natural gas output fell by 4.9% year-on-year data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry revealed.
Fertiliser production too trailed behind, amounting to 0.9% in May, which is lower, when compared with the same month last year.
The cumulative fertiliser output in April-May 2026 was 4.5% lower, when compared to the corresponding period of last year.
