Delhi University Students Can Now Directly Opt for PhD After Four-Year Undergraduate Programme

New Delhi: Students who have graduated this year after completing the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) from the Delhi University (DU) can now opt for PhD programmes directly, reported the Hindustan Times. 

According to the report, candidates who have secured a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 7.5 or above would be considered as eligible for the 2026-27 academic session related to PhD programmes. For students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (ST) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, a CGPA of 7.0 would be considered as the benchmark for entry into PhD programmes.

As per a press release by DU, a total of 75,948 students had enrolled for the FYUP in 2022-23. Students who have finished the four-year graduation programme are among the first batch to be part of a course kickstarted in sync with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Out of the total batch strength of 75,948 students enrolled, the figure for those who completed the FYUP stands at 35,943 (34.27%). While 40,005 students chose to quit the programme after completing three years.

The abysmal rate of students who finally completed graduation as part of the FYUP confirms apprehensions of education experts who have been vocal about infrastructure related issues and a curriculum based more on theoretical instruction rather than practical application.
