Lucknow's KGMU Bans Preparation of Non-Veg in Hostel Messes After UP Governor's Objections

New Delhi: King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, has banned cooking of non-vegetarian food in all 18 of its hostel messes after UP governor Governor Anandiben Patel commented on the matter at the university's convocation ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Patel said a team of the Jan Bhawan secretariat, the official residence of the governor of UP, found non-vegetarian food being prepared in three hostels during an inspection of university buildings. Following her remarks, the university's administration issued a directive prohibiting non-vegetarian food within its campus dining halls, even as Patel did not explicitly demand a stop to the practice.
According to Times of India, KGMU spokesperson K.K. Singh said the dean of student welfare reached out to the institute's chief proctor after the governor's comments and gave instructions banning non-vegetarian food in hostel messes. He added that students were still permitted to order and prepare non-vegetarian food privately, however, it would not be cooked in dining halls or by cooperative cooks within hostel premises.

This is the second time in two months that Patel, who is also the chancellor of state universities, had called out the availability of non-vegetarian food in UP universities. On June 15, while addressing the gathering during the third convocation of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Patel objected to the provision of non-vegetarian food in the institute's messes. The university's director C.M. Singh maintained that menus were chosen by students though an eight-member committee comprising faculty and elected student representatives.
Patel has also been under fire over her controversial remarks at a convocation ceremony in Kanpur, urging women graduates to become "expert mothers" before aspiring to achieve other professional goals.
