Maharashtra ATS Detains 2 School Teachers in NEET-UG Paper Leak Case

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan had claimed on Saturday that the leak was a "localised" affair and the exam that was held does not need to be scrapped, as only a limited number of students were affected.

New Delhi: Soon after the Union government ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the NEET-UG paper leak and conduct of public examinations in India, it has been reported that the Maharashtra police too – in addition to the case in Bihar – has detained people in relation to the paper leak.

Late on Saturday night, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad detained two teachers from Latur district who teach at a government school. Sanjay Tukaram Jadhav and Jalil Umarkhan were detained for questioning, India Today reported.

Earlier in the day, the Union government had removed Subodh Kumar Singh, the chief of the National Testing Agency (NTA), from his position.

The government also postponed the NEET-PG exam that was scheduled for Sunday as a “precaution”. Several student bodies – including the ABVP, the students’ wing of the RSS – protested this decision and accused the government of destroying the education system.

Though the paper leak investigation appears to have found suspects across states, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan had claimed on Saturday that the leak was a “localised” affair and the exam that was held does not need to be scrapped, as only a limited number of students were affected. He also claimed that the UGC-NET exam was cancelled because of logistical reasons and not because of a paper leak.

Earlier, Pradhan had tried to claim that there was no leak in the NEET-UG paper either.

The Bihar police have arrested four people in connection with the paper leak case.
