New Delhi: The ranks of over 23 lakh candidates who had appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) undergraduate have been revised after a retest was conducted for some of the candidates on the orders of the Supreme Court.

After the scores of the retest were declared on June 30, the withdrawal of grace marks along with the retest scores have resulted into the revision of ranks for around 23 lakh students who had appeared for NEET-UG, reported The Hindu.

Earlier, under fire for arbitrarily awarding grace marks, the National Testing Agency (NTA) had stated that it would withdraw the grace marks and provide a retest option for 1,563 candidates. However, only 812 of the 1,563 candidates had turned up for the test on June 23.

After the retest scores were declared, candidates found their ranks had changed, resulting in more confusion among students and parents.

Nitin Sinmar, 21, who had secured the 17,495th rank, found out that after the retest scores were uploaded on the NTA website, his rank was revised up by 26 positions to 17,469, reported The Hindu.

Tushar Sen, another candidate said that even after the revised ranks were announced, his rank had improved by only 38 positions.

Dr. Krishan Sharma, the parent of an aggrieved NEET candidate told The Hindu that the NTA should put the data of the top 50,000 candidates in the public domain so that one can analyse if the toppers are concentrated in clusters or randomised across centres.

Ever since the NEET-UG results were declared, multiple discrepancies and alleged incidents of question paper leaks, along with objections about the NTA awarding grace marks have come to the foray, resulting in massive protests across the country.
