A series of arrests and crackdown on students shows that the Uttar Pradesh government is cracking down on those who dare to dissent democratically.

Among those who have faced action is student leader Nitin Raj, who has been in jail for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He has got admission in JNU's MPhil programme, but was unable to join. His family says he is being targeted because he comes from a Dalit community.

Another student, Pooja Shukla, protested against chief minister Yogi Adityanath in 2017 for raising the fee. She was sent to jail, while the Lucknow University did not take her admission in a post-graduate course.
