On June 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Delhi University to address the valedictory ceremony of the centenary celebration. During his visit, there were allegations that slogans of “Modi ji ko Jai Shree Ram… Jai Shree Ram” were chanted in the auditorium. The Wire was able to verify that the slogans were indeed chanted and they can be heard on the official YouTube channel of the Ministry of Education, which broadcasted the event live.

Moreover, several student activists were put under house arrest by the Delhi Police on the morning of June 30, to avoid any opposition to the PM’s visit.

Student activists who were put under house arrest include All India Students Association (AISA)’s Delhi president Abhigyan, AISA DU secretary Anjali and Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS)’s Delhi state secretary Kamal Tiwari. CYSS is the student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Kamal Tiwari spoke to The Wire and said, “On the morning of June 30, some Delhi Police personnel came to my house and put me under house arrest. They didn’t allow me to visit the campus, while PM Modi was there. They also seized my mobile phone and returned it back in the afternoon.”

Furthermore, a notice by the Hindu College of Delhi University regarding PM Modi’s event also faced major backlash from a section of students. The June 28 notice asked all colleges to live telecast the programme. In addition, it said that the presence of all students was mandatory, students cannot wear a black dress and “students will be given five attendances for attending the live streaming.”

The Wire spoke to Lenin and Kusumam, who are third-year students at the Hindu College. The students condemned the notice released by the college.
