New Delhi: The Union government on Tuesday (May 26) increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) for the fourth time in the last 11 days. The latest increase by Rs 2/kg, effective in Delhi and parts of North India, has been attributed to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

The price of CNG in Delhi now stands at Rs 83.09 per kg – an overall increase of Rs 6 since the first hike on May 15.

It must be noted that while the tensions across West Asia have led to a shortage of fuel, the government only began raising fuel prices after the conclusion of state assembly polls.

The latest CNG price hike by Indraprastha Gas Ltd – North India’s largest gas distributor – comes a day after the Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL), which is the largest city-gas distributor of Mumbai, was asked to stop all support schemes and subsidies for commercial gas, the Hindu reported.

The government has also raised petrol and diesel prices on four occasions in less than two weeks, with petrol prices in four cities – Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai – above Rs 100 now.
