21 Dead in a Day as Floods Intensify in Assam 

New Delhi: A single day’s deluge in Assam claimed 21 lives in total, including 12 men, five women, and 4 children, according to an official report issued by the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Tuesday (June 21).  

The report estimated that 16 districts were affected, with 872 villages impacted. The largest populations, crop damage, and inundation are concentrated in the districts of Upper Assam including Sivasagar,  Jorhat, Golaghat, and Dibrugarh.  

“Multiple rivers in Assam have been flowing well over their danger levels since Sunday, flooding large swathes of Upper Assam with levels not seen in recent years,” as per a report by The Indian Express.

The ASDMA report lists 564,660 affected people and 24,210.35 hectares of total crop area submerged. The data records 185,029 animals affected and 107 animals washed away. 

The flood has further caused extensive damage to Assam’s roads, bridges, embankments, PWSS systems, and power lines across Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat and other districts. 

The recurrent floods in Assam result from the state's location within the Brahmaputra floodplain, which receives heavy monsoon rainfall and large volumes of sediment. The intense rainfall and overflowing rivers trigger the flood during the monsoon, while the state’s geography and drainage system further amplify their impact. Thus, making it highly flood-prone.  

“Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the latest burst of deluge to a cloudburst upstream. He is scheduled to visit the flood-affected areas and relief camps in Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat districts on Wednesday (July 22, 2026) to review the relief operations," reported by The Hindu. 

A total of 273 relief camps and centres are open, with 12,284 people currently staying in the camps and 100,318 in relief distribution centres.
