Assam Floods: Over 24 Lakh People Affected, Death Toll Reaches 70

New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam remained serious with more than 24 lakh people being affected across the state. On Saturday, July 7, six more deaths took place taking the total number of deaths owing to landslide and floods in the state to 70, reported the Press Trust of India.

An official bulletin issued by the Assam government stated that two persons died in Charaideo and one each in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts on Saturday.

The bulletin added that 23,96,648 people have been impacted by the floods in 29 districts of Assam, while cropland of 68,768.5 hectare was submerged.

A total of 577 relief camps are being run across the state, where 53,429 people have taken shelter.

In districts including Nimatighat, Tezpur, Goalpara and Dhubri the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger marks while its tributaries Burhi Dihing at Chenimari, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing, and Kopili at Dharamtul and Sankosh in Golakganj were also flowing above the danger levels, reported PTI.

Since the past several days, massive rain, coupled along with devastation resulting from floods continued to impact eastern India, especially the northeast.

The bulletin added that a total of 15,49,161 animals have also been impacted by the floods.
