New Delhi: Eight people continued to remain trapped in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli on Saturday (March 1) morning, a day after an avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project in the area.
According to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, 47 workers have been rescued in the last 24 hours, reported The Indian Express.
“We have been able to rescue 47 people and search is underway for the remaining eight workers. We are hopeful they will also be rescued soon,” said Vinod Kumar Suman, secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority.
According to Chamoli district administration, the workers, who were employed by a contractor to clear the stretch of a road between Mana village and Mana Pass, were in their bunkers when the incident took place early on Friday (February 28) morning.
“They were in eight bunkers around 7.15 am when the incident took place on Friday and we are evacuating the workers from these,” said a senior official.
According to a list released by the State Disaster Management Authority, the trapped labourers are from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir, among other states. The names of 10 labourers have been listed without mentioning the states they belong to, reported the Press Trust of India.
Officials said that Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel based in Mana were overseeing the rescue operation.
Mana is the last village on the India-Tibet border at a height of 3,200 metres.
