New Delhi: Heavy rains caused landslides in several parts of Uttarakhand’s Dehradun district on Tuesday. At least five people are feared to have been swept away as the rivers continue to swell, the Indian Express reported.

Over 500 people are being evacuated to safer areas at Shri Dev Bhoomi Institute in Premnagar.

The red alert, issued at 5 am this morning, warned of heavy to very heavy rain, thunder accompanied by lightning and spells of intense to extremely intense rain.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah assured Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami of the Union government’s support. “They assured the state of all possible assistance and said the Centre stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of disaster,” the state government said.
