Podcast: The Effects of Climate Change Are Already Visible in Mumbai

In conversation with Nikhil Anand, assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Excessive flooding, that has become an annual affair in cities like Mumbai, and the two recent landslides in the city that killed 50 people are early signs of climate change.

“But Mumbai is taking note of this and planning for the future,” Nikhil Anand, assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, says in this podcast discussion with Sidharth Bhatia.

Anand, himself from Mumbai, is an environmental anthropologist whose research focuses on cities, infrastructure, state power and the environment. He has written Hydraulic City: Water and the Infrastructures of Politics in Mumbai.

He was among the experts invited to contribute ideas for a climate adaptation and mitigation plan of the city’s municipal corporation recently. The plan, once finalised, will suggest ways to reduce the impact of the effects of climate change, especially on the city’s most marginalised communities.
