New Delhi: Renowned filmmaker Kumar Shahani passed away in Kolkata on Saturday (February 24) night. He was 83.

Reports say Shahani was ailing and had been in the hospital.

Shahani directed a number of acclaimed films including Maya Darpan, Char Adhyay and Kasba.

The director studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, and began his career with Maya Darpan in 1972. The film is based on a short story by Nirmal Varma. His next film, Tarang in 1984, won a National Film Award.

Actor Mita Vashisht, who worked with Shahani on a number of projects, told PTI, “He passed away around 11 pm last night due to age-related health issues at a hospital in Kolkata. He was ailing and his health had been declining. It’s a deep personal loss. We were in touch with his family. Kumar and I would talk a lot and I knew he was ailing and was in and out of hospital.”

“I admired him as a human being and as a filmmaker. He was one of the greatest directors in our country. His integrity and consciousness towards society, art, cinema, was unparallelled. His films were inspiring,” she continued.
