After Tahawwur Rana's Extradition, Govt Appoints Team of Prosecutors to Conduct 26/11 Trial

New Delhi: Following the extradition of 2008 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana from the US, the Union Govt has appointed a team of public prosecutors headed by solicitor general Tushar Mehta to conduct the trial in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case.

The prosecution team, including Mehta, additional solicitor general S.V. Raju and senior advocates Dayan Krishnan and Narender Mann will represent the National Investigation Agency (NIA) before the special courts at Delhi, the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India, reported Bar and Bench.

Rana is presently in judicial custody till June 6.

Following his extradition, Rana had landed in Delhi on April 10 evening, immediately after which officers of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally arrested him.

A Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, Rana was brought to India to face the government’s charges after Washington moved to extradite him and the US judiciary upheld his extradition over multiple rounds of appeal.

He is accused of conspiring with US citizen David Headley and with operatives of the Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami terror outfits to execute the 2008 attacks, the NIA has said.

Years before his extradition to India, Rana in 2011 was convicted by a US court of providing material support to LeT, although he was acquitted of conspiring to provide material support to the Mumbai attacks.
