New Delhi: Following two low-intensity blasts near the Army cantonment boundary wall in Amritsar’s Khasa and outside the headquarters of the Border Security Force's (BSF's) Punjab Frontier in Jalandhar on Wednesday (May 6), Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to create an atmosphere of fear in the state to gain electoral advantage, reported The Telegraph.

“The BJP wants to scare people into getting their votes. They have said that now it is Punjab’s turn after West Bengal, which indicates these minor blasts are part of their preparation for the Assembly elections,” alleged CM Mann.

Launching a scathing attack on the BJP, Mann said that the blasts meant the BJP “is getting ready for Punjab.”

“This is the BJP’s style of functioning. Whenever they have to contest an election in a state, they either engineer riots, blasts, or create tension between people of two faiths. These blasts mean that the BJP is getting ready for Punjab,” Mann said in Anandpur Sahib, reported Indian Express.

Mann termed the BJP a “communal party” and alleged that the blasts were done to scare people away.

“Now that the Bengal elections are over, they are turning to Punjab. This is how they garner votes by scaring people away. Punjab believes in world peace and in Sarbat Da Bhala. These vile acts will not work. Punjabis have always stood like a rock with the country,” said Mann.

The BJP denied the allegations and accused the chief minister of making reckless statements.

“On one side, the DGP is saying that Pakistan’s ISI was behind blasts and, on the other hand, Mann is making reckless statement. Either Bhagwant Mann brings proof to support his claim or tender resignation from the chief minister’s chair,” said BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, citing Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav’s statement that as preliminary investigation suggests Pakistan’s inter-services intelligence (ISI) could be behind the blasts.
