New Delhi: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav announced on Thursday (October 9) that if his party is voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections, a law will be brought to ensure that every family in the state has one government job.

“Any family in Bihar that does not have a government job, such families will be given government jobs through a new law. They (NDA government) did not give any jobs for 20 years, but within 20 days of forming the government, this law will be passed and within 20 months there will be no house in Bihar that will not have a government job,” said the Bihar leader of opposition while addressing a press conference.

Yadav said that he had made the promise of providing government jobs when the RJD-Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) alliance had formed the government in 2020 and five lakh jobs were provided.

“At that time too several questions were asked about how this will be done. Then too we had said that this will be done in a scientific manner. We have studied this scientifically, we have data of all such families on the basis of our survey. If we are making this announcement, it is my pledge that we are only promising what is possible. This is not 'jumlebaazi', we are not cheating anyone. Tejashwi does not need to give proof. We have already done this in 17 months and gave jobs to 5 lakh people. If we get a full five year term, how many jobs we can give,” said Yadav.

Yadav’s promise on Thursday comes days after the NDA government initiated direct transfers of Rs 10,000 each into the bank accounts of 75 lakh women in Bihar, with the announcement being made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on September 26.

Just days before the poll dates were announced, on October 3 in Patna, chief minister Nitish Kumar announced another tranche: Rs 2,500 crore deposited into the accounts of 25 lakh women beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, with each recipient receiving Rs 10,000.

In the 2020 assembly elections Yadav had promised 10 lakh jobs, which propelled the Mahagathbandhan to win 110 seats, just 12 short of the majority. The RJD on its own won 75 seats.

Later in a post on X the RJD leader said that the party had made a "historic and transformative" promise to enact "Special Job/Employment Act" within 20 days of forming the government.

"For 20 years, this government has failed to provide jobs and employment. As soon as our government is formed, within 20 days, we will enact a “Special Job-Employment Act” and ensure that every family gets a job within 20 months. Tejashwi has shown by providing 𝟓 lakh jobs in 17 months, and now we will provide a job to every family in 20 months."
