New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party has slammed the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh after the latter decided to rename eight railway stations in the Lucknow division of Northern Railways after saints and freedom fighters.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked the BJP and said that instead of renaming places, the party should focus on improving the condition of railway stations and preventing train accidents, reported the Press Trust of India.

An order issued by the Northern Railways says that Kasimpur Halt Railway Station will now be known as Jais City Railway Station, Jais as Guru Gorakhnath Dham, Misrauli as Maa Kalikan Dham, and Bani as Swami Paramhans.

The other railway stations which have been renamed include Nihalgarh Railway Station, which has been renamed as Maharaja Bijli Pasi Railway Station, Akbarganj to Maa Ahorwa Bhawani Dham, Warisganj to Amar Shahid Bhale Sultan, and Fursatganj to Tapeshwarnath Dham, reported PTI.

The renaming exercise took place after former MP from Amethi Smriti Irani had made a demand for preserving the ‘cultural identity and heritage’ of these places.

“The BJP government is requested to also change the condition of railway stations along with the names. And when you are done with changing the names, think about preventing record-breaking rail accidents,” said SP Chief Yadav, reported PTI.
