New Delhi: Amid rumours of a reunion between the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), leaders of the group loyal to Sharad Pawar (Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP SP)) asserted on Tuesday (December 23) that the party will be contesting the upcoming municipal elections in Mumbai schedule for January 15 as a part of the Opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

“Our core committee has been discussing with all the parties, including Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena. After today’s meeting, we have decided to contest the elections in Mumbai as a part of MVA,” said NCP-SP president Shashikant Shinde, reported The Hindu.

Earlier, there were talks the NCP-SP and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP allying for municipal elections in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, which have been traditional strongholds of the NCPs. The upcoming civic polls are the first municipal elections where the two parties are contesting after their 2022 split.

Shinde said that many office-bearers of his party in Pune expressed their willingness to join the Ajit Pawar group in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Among other parties which are part of the MVA, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) (Shiv Sena (UBT)) has hinted of allying with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the party of Raj Thackeray.

“Our effort is that both Thackeray brothers and MVA should fight together. So that there is no division of votes,” NCP-SP MP, reported Hindu.

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar’s NCP is expected to contest the civic elections in Pune against its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Ajit Pawar is a responsible leader, so he must have said it thoughtfully. However, no such official proposal has been received,” said Sule.
