New Delhi: Opposition parties in Assam have slammed the BJP government in the state for making NRC application a pre-condition for obtaining an Aadhaar card.

The Congress and the Trinamool Congress have said that Assam is turning into a “banana republic”, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP, reported the Press Trust of India.

“Till date NRC has not been notified by Registrar General of India & yet it is the basis for AADHAR. Secondly even Non citizens in India get AADHAR cards if they have stayed 182 days in the 12 months before applying Lastly unless the Gov. declares a person an illegal migrant how can they refuse AADHAR. Assam is a banana republic under @himantabiswa & @BJP4India,” Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Sushmita Deb posted on X on December 12 (Thursday).

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma had said that the decision to make NRC application a pre-condition for obtaining Aadhaar card was taken in view of “infiltration attempts by citizens of Bangladesh.” The government had decided on Wednesday (December 11) that all Aadhar applications will be rejected if the family of the applicant and their family had not applied for the NRC.

“he problem of fake beneficiaries is huge in Assam. Government data itself shows how crores of public funds was wasted in the implementation of PM Kisan. People in Assam are paying GST, cess, duty but the entire money is being funnelled into the pockets of BJP party members.,” deputy leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi posted on X.
