New Delhi: A portion of a bridge constructed over the Gandaki river in Bihar’s Siwan collapsed on the morning of July 3.
The bridge is situated in Siwan’s Deoria block and connects several villages with Mahrajganj. This is the seventh such incident in the state within the last 15 days reported The Hindu. No casualties have been reported.
This is also the second instance in last 11 days when a bridge has collapsed in Siwan.
“A portion of a bridge in Deoria block collapsed this morning. The exact cause is not known so far. Senior officials of the block have reached the spot and I am also going there,” said Deputy Development Commissioner Mukesh Kumar, reported The Hindu.
Officials said that since the last few days repair work was being carried out on the bridge, which was constructed in 1982-83.
Locals suggest that heavy rainfall could have resulted in the collapse of the bridge, weakening its structure.
Earlier, on June 22, another bridge had collapsed in Siwan’s Darounda area.
Several similar incidents have been reported in districts such as Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj recently, resulting in the Bihar Government constituting a committee to investigate these instances, reported The Hindu.
