CEC Dodges Questions on Voter Rolls, Modi Govt Wants to Sack Jailed CMs | The Wire Wrap
Facing criticism from opposition parties over allegations of “vote theft” and the contentious special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, in which 65 lakh electors have been left out of the draft voter rolls, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar addressed his first press conference on Sunday (August 17).
In his over hour-long press conference Kumar provided a series of non-answers on concerns over irregularities in voter rolls, while remaining silent on the number of illegal immigrants found, and the number of enumeration forms received during the Bihar SIR.
The opposition INDIA bloc has accused the CEC of acting like a Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson.
Meanwhile amid the opposition's protests against the Bihar SIR in parliament, the Modi government brought the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The amendment allows the governors of states and lieutenant generals of Union territories to sack a chief minister or any state minister if they are detained in jail for 30 days, even if not convicted.
